Corsica, 2 kbSeason – Year round
Duration– 10 - 14 day expeditions

The beautiful island of Corsica is like a half-submerged mountain range in the Mediterranean, situated close to Italy. Its coastline is rocky and barren, with few places flat and fertile enough for extensive cultivation. The Corsicans have for centuries herded sheep, goats, cattle and pigs into the mountains for summer grazing. As a result, a comprehensive network of paths has been created and many mountain huts have been built.

The GR20 is a popular trek, developed on the paths originally used by the mountain shepherds and their livestock. It now allows trekkers to walk from valley to valley and over rocky ridges as they pass through the heart of Corsica.

The GR20 runs from Calenzana, in the north-west to Conca, in the south-east, passing close to the highest mountains in Corsica, Monte Cinto (2,706m), Paglia Orba (2,525m) and Monte Rotondu (2,622m), as it weaves back and forth over the rocky central spine of the island.

It has the reputation of being the 'toughest of all the GR routes' with parts of it crossing bare rock and involving scrambling and sections using fixed cables, chains and ladders for assistance. The GR20 can be completed in ten to fourteen days from the UK and is often used in conjunction with the Expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award..
