Everest 2006 (22nd May)
Congratulations to this year's Jagged Globe Everest Expedition who summited Everest on May 17 – the first team to do so from the south side this year. The team includes Rhys Jones, who became one of the youngest summiteers when he reached the top on his 20th birthday! New Staff (22nd May)
Welcome to Tessa Harrison who has joining our full time office team as our Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator. Tessa will be working with our team of Regional Co-ordinators responsible for developing expedition programmes with individual schools.
Tessa is a keen runner, competing at junior and senior level for the Welsh Orienteering team, leading to an active membership of the junior Great Britain Orienteering squad for 3 years. Tessa has travelled to America and Africa most recently, with a wish to return to South America in the near future.
Fund Raising (22nd May)
To help participants raise the funds for their expedition, Adventureworks provides each participant with a ‘Fund Raising’ booklet, which is full of ideas.
Many of the leaders of Jagged Globe expeditions are available to give lectures on their expeditions to the highest mountains in the world, which schools can use to help raise funds.
We will discuss these and other fund raising opportunities with you as we develop your programme.
British School of Paris - Neal Short Everest Lectures (22nd May)
Recently, Neal Short, a teacher from Merseyside, spoke to an audience at the British School of Paris (BSP). Neal led the Jagged Globe Expedition which summited Everest from the north side in Spring 2005.
Neal completed his weekend with a day at Fontainebleau bouldering with Mark Manville –the teacher from BSP who is leading this expedition.
Brian Blessed Supports King Edwards VII School, Sheffield (22nd May)
The actor, TV personality and mountaineer, Brian Blessed has agreed to become the Patron for the King Edwards VII School, Sheffield 2007 Kyrgyzstan Expedition.
Brian has joined a number of Jagged Globe expeditions including his own attempt on Everest in 1993.
The team are also hoping to make a film of their expedition with the Award winning Posing Productions team of Alastair Lee and David Halsted. They made the highly acclaimed ‘Twice upon a time in Bolivia’ and ‘Storms the Movie’.
The school have just completed a weekend in Wales tackling 12 of the 14 Welsh 3000ft Peaks as part of their preparation. The team found it a rewarding but challenging experience. They are now looking forward to their training weekend in Scotland next winter.
Mont Blanc (22nd May)
Benenden School in Surrey met one of their Alpine Guides Andy Owen at a training and preparation day at their school recently.
The group will spend a week in Arolla training and attempting a number of peaks before moving to Chamonix to climb Mont Blanc or other peaks in the area.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (22nd May)
Adventureworks is a licensed Commercial Access Organisation to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This summer we are working with several schools to assist participants achieve the Gold Award in the UK, Europe and Overseas.
Wollaston School (22nd May)
Wollaston School have just completed their Gold Award Practice expeditions in the Lake District and North Wales in preparation for their Expedition to Ecuador in July. Various teams will be mountaineering and trekking as well as visiting the rain forest. They have also been fundraising and collecting sporting equipment for the Clarita Luz children’s home.
Guildford High School (22nd May)
Guildford High School, who will be undertaking the Haute Route as part of their Gold Expedition, met Mal Creasey and Mike Rosser to finalise their preparations. Two groups will undertake this ancient route from Chamonix in France to Zermatt in Switzerland. They will cross a number of glaciated cols and attempt a few peaks on their 8 day journey during July that will finish under the imposing shape of the Matterhorn.
Westholme School (22nd May)
Westholme School will be trekking in the Ausangate region of Peru and will attempt El Misti as part of their expedition. Their 28-day visting during July and August will also include exploring the ancient Inca capital of Machu Picchu as well as visiting the Colca Canyon and spending a week living within the Sayllafa community.
Ysgol Bro Myrddin (22nd May)
After a successful training weekend in mid-Wales at the end of March, Ysgol Bro Myddrin are looking forward to trekking in the High Atlas Mountains and climbing Djebel Toubkal, the highest point in Morocco for their Gold Award. They will also be living and working with one of the hill communities, which the school first visited a few years ago. They are raising money for the local school, which they will be working with. Finally they are visiting the ancient fishing port of Essaouira from which they will camel trek.
Journey of a Lifetime (JoLT) 2006 (22nd May)
Adventureworks is supporting the JoLT Trust Expedition to India and Bhutan this summer. The team of 24 youngsters, 8 leaders and Ed Chard from Adventureworks, are now looking forward to their month-long expedition after a training and preparation weekend last month. The team will first travel from Delhi to Ladakh in the north of the country to trek, raft and camel ride, as well as discovering the way of life for this Tibetan Buddhist community including a visit to the Thiksey monastery . They will then travel to the little explored Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, where amongst other activities, they will try the National Sport of Archery.
Finally they return to India and Rajasthan where they will visit the Taj Mahal, Jaiphur and spend time living in a local community.

Javier in Wales (22nd May)
Javier Herrera, our Ecuadorian head guide, was in the UK during the early part of May. He visited Wales with Mike and Adele, climbing on Moel Siabod, the East Face of Tryfan, Castell Helen at Gogarth (Anglesey) and at Tremadog. At the end of the trip Javier declared that ‘Wales has mountains as good and exciting as Ecuador’. He especially liked the experience of abseiling down a sea cliff to begin climbing – an experience not found in Ecuador!
